26. The Flight

“Yes. We’re ready now.” Arthur stepped forward, and swung himself up onto the winged beast’s neck. He crawled onto the back and sat just in front of the amphibious couple. The back of the Koolatius was covered with long, coarse hairs that tickled Arthur as he sat. Evangeline leaned forward. “Grab onto the hairs so you don’t fall off!” Arthur nodded and did so.

Alexander perched himself on the bird’s great neck, set Starboard on his lap, and reached out his hand to help up Augustine, who had just pulled his goggles over his eyes.

“Can I sit on his head?” Gus asked.

Frederick laughed. “I think so! But hold onto those things.” Gus clambered down the neck and perched himself between the two giant crests on the creature’s head. He held on tight as the bird lifted its head high off the ground. “Hold on, boys!”
