“Shhh! It’s okay, little guy.”

The creature’s head shot up and locked onto Alexander with cold, white eyes that appeared to be glowing as they reflected the moonlight. Two, large fangs protruded from the upper lip of its fox-like face, and two large fox-like ears perked up as well. There was a tall plume of coarse hair that shot out from the middle of its head and tapered down its back—it reminded Alexander of a well-groomed horse’s mane. Although it was small, Alexander could tell that the creature was wild and could be dangerous. He glanced down and noticed fresh, wet blood shining on the creature's mangled left leg. He realized it was immobilized by a wound. Alexander kept his hand outstretched, as he spoke to the creature.

“What happened, buddy? You okay?”

The creature whimpered and let out a high-pitched howl.
